Day-to-day cleaning

For routine cleaning, use a soft, slightly damp cloth — never abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals. Mild soapy water works well for light marks. Always dry the surface gently after cleaning to prevent water staining.

What to avoid

These can damage the burnished surface and dull the sheen that makes venetian plaster so distinctive.

Dealing with marks and scuffs

Minor scuffs can often be buffed out gently with a clean, dry cloth. For deeper marks, a professional touch-up is usually the best option — a skilled plasterer can blend the repair seamlessly into the existing finish.

Long-term maintenance

A professionally applied venetian plaster finish can last 20–30 years or more with correct care. Every few years, a light application of beeswax polish will help maintain the sheen and protect the surface. Avoid silicone-based polishes, which can seal the surface and prevent the lime from breathing.
