What is Venetian plaster?

Venetian plaster is a wall finish made from slaked lime and marble dust, originating in Venice during the Renaissance. Applied in multiple thin layers and burnished to a high sheen, it creates a surface that mimics polished marble — with extraordinary depth, warmth and luminosity.

Unlike wallpaper or paint, venetian plaster is part of the wall itself. It won't peel, fade or need replacing every few years. A professionally applied finish can last decades with minimal maintenance.

How is it applied?

The application process requires skill and patience. Each coat is applied thinly with a flat steel trowel, allowed to partially dry, then burnished to compact the surface and develop the characteristic sheen. Typically three to four coats are required for a full finish.

The final burnishing — done with extreme pressure and a polishing compound — is what gives venetian plaster its mirror-like quality. It cannot be rushed, and it cannot be faked.

Is it right for my home?

Venetian plaster suits almost any interior — from period properties to contemporary new builds. It works particularly well in:
